What this guide covers and why the Ugandan details matter
This guide covers two things people in Uganda search for: the rates you see at forex bureaux, and the hours when the global market is open in your time. It also explains who regulates what, because that part is often misunderstood.
The local details matter because Uganda runs on East Africa Time, UTC+3. The trading day that matters most to the world, the London and New York overlap, happens between 15:00 and 20:00 EAT. That is late afternoon and early evening here, not the middle of the night.
Rates also move for local reasons. The shilling responds to demand from importers, exporters, NGOs and remittance flows. A rate you saw this morning may not be the rate on offer after lunch.

A figure with no source and no date is a guess with good manners. Anything we could not trace is left out rather than printed from memory.
How to read forex bureau rates in Uganda today
A forex bureau quotes two prices: the rate at which it sells foreign currency to you, and the rate at which it buys foreign currency from you. The gap between them is the bureau's margin, and it varies from one counter to another.
Bureaux in Kampala do not publish one national rate. Each sets its own, so the best rate for dollars today may be at a different bureau tomorrow. If you want the best forex rate in Uganda today, compare several bureaux before you change money, and ask for the rate for the exact amount you plan to exchange.
You will also see rates quoted online under names like dollar house forex bureau Uganda rates today. Treat those as a starting point, not a guarantee. The number that counts is the one the cashier tells you when you are standing at the counter.

| The rate your account uses | Your broker's own conversion | The broker's rate card |

An indicative rate is for sizing a position in your head, not for settling one. The gap between it and your broker's conversion is part of what a trade costs you.
Forex trading in Uganda and what the regulator covers
Forex trading in Uganda usually means two different activities. One is changing physical currency, which bureaux do. The other is speculative trading through an online broker, often with leverage. These are not the same thing, and they are not regulated the same way.
The Capital Markets Authority of Uganda, CMA Uganda, publishes a licensed persons list at cmauganda.co.ug. That register covers unit trust managers, fund managers, investment advisers, stock brokers, custodians, dealers and trustees. An online or leveraged foreign-exchange broker is not one of those categories.
So a firm offering leveraged forex trading to Ugandan residents is working under a licence issued somewhere else, not a Ugandan one. Before you send money, check the CMA Uganda list yourself and check where the broker says it is licensed. Do not take anyone's word for it, including ours.
| Field | What it says |
|---|---|
| Regulator | Capital Markets Authority of Uganda (CMA Uganda) |
| Register | CMA Uganda licensed persons list |
| Published at | cmauganda.co.ug |
| Covers retail forex | No category for an online leveraged FX broker |

A register says whether a firm holds a licence on the day you look, and nothing about how it treats clients. Search the legal entity from the broker's own footer, not the brand.
Session times in EAT and how money moves in and out
The main sessions in local time are: Sydney 00:00 to 09:00 EAT, Tokyo 03:00 to 12:00 EAT, London 11:00 to 20:00 EAT, and New York 15:00 to 00:00 EAT. The London and New York overlap, 15:00 to 20:00 EAT, is when activity is usually heaviest.
If you trade, those hours decide when you can react. A move that happens during the New York session lands after midnight here. Plan for that rather than fighting it.
Funding is the other local factor. Mobile Money is the main payment rail in Uganda, alongside MTN MoMo, Airtel Money, bank transfer and card. Fees and limits are set by the provider, not by this guide, so check the broker's funding page and your Mobile Money app before you commit.
A trading day on an EAT clock
- Busiest window
- 15:00-20:00 EAT — London and New York open together
- Thinnest stretch
- 00:00-09:00 EAT — Sydney alone, wider spreads
- European open
- 11:00-20:00 EAT
- US open
- 15:00-00:00 EAT
- Closed
- Friday New York close until the Sydney open on Monday
Hours are shown for the clocks in force today: London is on GMT until 28 March, New York is on EDT until 1 November. Uganda does not change clocks, so each move shifts these local times by an hour and the page is rebuilt on the day it happens.

Mobile Money is the default funding rail, so the order of operations matters
Most Ugandan traders reach a broker account through Mobile Money, not a bank card. That changes the sequence: the money leaves your MTN MoMo or Airtel Money wallet first, then arrives at the broker, then becomes tradable margin. Treat those as three separate steps, because a delay or failure at any one of them is not a trading problem.
A common failure mode is assuming the broker balance updates the moment the wallet is debited. It may not. Screenshot the Mobile Money confirmation message and keep it until the broker balance matches. If the two never match, that confirmation is the only evidence the payment desk will accept when you raise the issue.
Check the broker's own funding page for which rails it accepts and what it says about processing. Do not rely on a forum post or a friend's experience, because rails and cut-off times change. The published funding page is the only source that reflects the current arrangement.
How deposits and withdrawals travel
- MTN MoMo
- Mobile wallet — limits set by the wallet provider and the broker
- Airtel Money
- Mobile wallet — limits set by the wallet provider and the broker
- Bank transfer
- Limits set by your bank and the broker
- Card
- Card payment — limits set by your card issuer and the broker
Limits and fees are set by the provider and the broker and change without notice, so they are not printed here. Confirm both in the provider's app and on the broker's funding page, and withdraw to the same account you paid from.
A CMA Uganda licence covers the firm, not the trade you place
Being on the CMA Uganda licensed persons list at cmauganda.co.ug tells you a firm holds a licence for specified activities. It does not tell you that leveraged forex trading suits you, that a particular product is covered, or that losses are recoverable. Those are separate questions, and readers routinely merge them into one.
The practical consequence is that you should read the licence entry itself, not just confirm the name appears. Check what activity the licence covers. A firm can be licensed for one thing and offer another, and the gap between the two is where misunderstandings start.
Nothing on this page should be read as confirming any named broker is licensed, safe or suitable. Verify directly against the public list, and if the entry is unclear, ask CMA Uganda rather than the firm's own sales team.
What a broker asks for before a withdrawal
- National ID card or passport
- Who you are
- Selfie with the ID document
- That the document is in your hands
Brokers usually also ask for proof of address; requirements differ per firm. The account-opening page of the broker lists what that firm accepts.
EAT is fixed, but your broker's clock and your session planning are not
Uganda runs on East Africa Time, UTC+3, all year, with no daylight saving shift. That is a real advantage for planning: the London session starts at the same EAT hour in January and in July. Your calendar does not need rewriting twice a year.
The catch is that your broker's platform may display server time, which is often not EAT. If you set an alert for a session open and it fires at the wrong moment, the cause is usually the platform clock, not the market. Learn which clock the platform shows before you rely on it.
Mobile Money and bank transfers also follow local working rhythms, not market hours. A funding instruction sent late in the EAT day may not move until the next working day, which can leave you out of a session you had planned around.
| Platform | What it is | Who makes it |
|---|---|---|
| MetaTrader 4 | The older standard; expert advisors and a large script ecosystem | MetaQuotes |
| MetaTrader 5 | The newer build; more order types and timeframes | MetaQuotes |
| cTrader | Depth of market and a different order model | Spotware |
| The broker's own app | Usually simpler, and tied to that one firm | The broker |
A platform is software, not a safeguard: the same terminal is offered by licensed and unlicensed firms alike. The licence question is answered on the register, not in the app store.
Bureau rates and trading prices answer different questions
A forex bureau quote is a retail exchange rate for physical cash, set by that bureau. A trading price on a platform is a bid and ask for a contract, and the two are not comparable. Readers who compare them directly reach wrong conclusions about cost.
The bureau rate tells you what it costs to change money in your hand. The trading price tells you what it costs to open and close a position, before any commission or financing. One is a counter transaction, the other is a contract with ongoing charges.
If you need cash for daily spending, the bureau is the relevant market. If you are trading, the platform's published pricing is the relevant one. Keep the two decisions apart, and check the broker's own fee schedule rather than guessing at the numbers.
| What you see | What to check |
|---|---|
| A fixed monthly return, promised in advance | Ask which licence permits it, then look the firm up on the CMA Uganda licensed persons list. |
| A deposit asked for in gift cards or vouchers | Check the broker's own funding page: firms list bank, card and wallet rails, not vouchers. |
| Someone offering to trade the account for you | Managing money for a client is a separate permission. The register says whether a firm holds it. |
| A withdrawal released only after a new payment | Read the withdrawal terms you agreed to. A fee invented at payout time is not in them. |
None of this is a judgement about any firm. Each line is a check you can run yourself, starting at cmauganda.co.ug.
What time is the London forex session in Uganda?
The London session runs from 11:00 to 20:00 EAT. The overlap with New York, which many traders watch most closely, is 15:00 to 20:00 EAT. Uganda is on East Africa Time, UTC+3, all year. Daylight saving elsewhere still moves these hours: when London, New York or Sydney changes its clocks, its window lands an hour earlier or later on yours.
Where can I find the best forex rates in Uganda today?
There is no single published rate. Each bureau sets its own buy and sell prices, so the practical answer is to compare a few counters and ask for the rate on the amount you actually want to change. Online listings can help you shortlist, but the counter rate is the one that applies.
Is forex trading regulated in Uganda?
The CMA Uganda register at cmauganda.co.ug covers unit trust managers, fund managers, investment advisers, stock brokers, custodians, dealers and trustees. An online or leveraged forex broker is not one of those categories, so such a firm serving Ugandan residents holds a licence from another country. Check both the CMA list and the broker's own disclosures before funding an account.
