MT4 vs MT5 vs cTrader vs broker-built platforms

MT4 and MT5 are the most common forex platforms, cTrader is known for transparent pricing, and broker-built platforms vary widely.

Four kinds of platform, and what each is actually good at.

MT4 and MT5 are the most widely used forex platforms

MetaTrader 4 (MT4) and MetaTrader 5 (MT5) are software you install on a computer or phone. They connect to a broker's servers to place trades. MT4 was built for forex. MT5 handles forex and other markets, and includes more timeframes and tools.

Both platforms are stable and have many charts and indicators. MT4 has a huge community and many custom tools. MT5 is newer and faster for some tasks. Neither platform is tied to a single broker, so you can often use the same platform with different brokers.

In Uganda, MT4 and MT5 are common because they work on low-bandwidth connections. You can check your trades on a phone. The platform itself does not hold your money; the broker does.

A platform is software, not a safeguard: the same terminal is offered by licensed and unlicensed firms alike. The licence question is answered on the register, not in the app store.

cTrader focuses on transparent pricing and order execution

cTrader is another trading platform. It shows market depth and lets you trade directly from the chart. Many brokers offer cTrader because it is clear about spreads and commissions.

cTrader is known for fast execution and a clean interface. It may appeal to traders who want to see exactly how orders are filled. Not all brokers support cTrader, so availability can be limited.

Like MT4 and MT5, cTrader is separate from your broker account. You still need a broker that offers it. Check the broker's platform list before you commit.

A figure with no source and no date is a guess with good manners. Anything we could not trace is left out rather than printed from memory.

Broker-built platforms vary in quality and features

Some brokers build their own trading platforms. These can be web-based or mobile apps. They may offer simpler interfaces or unique tools. But they are not standardised, so features differ from broker to broker.

A broker-built platform might be easier for beginners. It might also lack advanced charting or automation. You cannot use it with another broker, so you are tied to that firm.

Before using one, test the demo. Check if it works well on your phone and internet connection. Also confirm how you deposit and withdraw, especially with Mobile Money.

Brokers usually also ask for proof of address; requirements differ per firm. The account-opening page of the broker lists what that firm accepts.

What to check before you choose a platform in Uganda

First, confirm the broker's regulatory status. The Capital Markets Authority of Uganda (CMA Uganda) publishes a list of licensed persons at cmauganda.co.ug. An online forex broker is not one of the categories on that list. A firm offering leveraged forex to Ugandan residents is therefore working under a licence issued somewhere else.

Second, check funding methods. Mobile Money is the main rail in Uganda. MTN MoMo and Airtel Money are common. Bank transfer and card may also be available. Look at the broker's funding page for details.

Third, consider your trading style. If you need automation, MT4 or MT5 may suit you. If you want transparent pricing, cTrader is an option. If you prefer simplicity, a broker-built platform might work. Always test with a demo first.

Session times matter too. The London/New York overlap is 15:00 to 20:00 EAT. That is often the busiest period. Make sure your platform is reliable during those hours.

An indicative rate is for sizing a position in your head, not for settling one. The gap between it and your broker's conversion is part of what a trade costs you.

Your platform choice is separate from your broker's licence status

A platform is software. A licence is a permission held by a firm. MT4, MT5 and cTrader are made by software companies, not regulators, so downloading one proves nothing about who holds your money.

Check the firm itself on the CMA Uganda licensed persons list at cmauganda.co.ug. If the name you are funding does not appear there, the platform's reputation does not help you.

This is the mistake readers make most often. They see a familiar logo, assume the licence travels with it, and skip the register. The register is the only check that matters.

A register says whether a firm holds a licence on the day you look, and nothing about how it treats clients. Search the legal entity from the broker's own footer, not the brand.

Mobile Money funding usually happens outside the platform

MT4, MT5 and cTrader do not hold your UGX. They display prices and send orders. Deposits and withdrawals run through the broker's own funding page or its app, which sits beside the trading software.

So the order is: open the broker account, fund it by MTN MoMo, Airtel Money, bank transfer or card, then log in to the platform. Skipping the middle step leaves you with a login and no balance.

Mobile Money is the main rail in Uganda, and it adds a step the platform never shows you. Confirm the receiving number inside the broker's own funding page before you send anything.

Airtel Money

Bank transfer

Limits and fees are set by the provider and the broker and change without notice, so they are not printed here. Confirm both in the provider's app and on the broker's funding page, and withdraw to the same account you paid from.

Platform time and Ugandan time are not the same clock

Charts on these platforms usually run on a server clock, not EAT. Uganda sits at UTC+3 all year, with no daylight saving shift, so the gap between your clock and the chart clock stays fixed rather than moving twice a year.

That matters for daily candles, session opens and any strategy tied to a specific hour. A candle that closes at a convenient time on the chart may close at an awkward hour in Kampala.

Find the server time in the platform settings and compare it with your own clock once. Write the offset down. Do not assume the two match because the prices look right.

Hours are shown for the clocks in force today: London is on GMT until 28 March, New York is on EDT until 1 November. Uganda does not change clocks, so each move shifts these local times by an hour and the page is rebuilt on the day it happens.

Switching platforms means rebuilding, not copying

Moving from MT4 to MT5, or from either to cTrader, is not a like-for-like transfer. Indicators, templates and automated tools are built for one platform and often will not run on another without being rewritten.

The practical consequence is time. A trader with a tuned MT4 setup should expect to rebuild it, not import it, and should test the rebuilt version on a demo before trusting it with real money.

cTrader and broker-built platforms differ again in how orders are placed and displayed. Read the broker's own platform guide before assuming a familiar button does the familiar thing.

None of this is a judgement about any firm. Each line is a check you can run yourself, starting at cmauganda.co.ug.

Keep the platform download and the account login separate

The software comes from the platform maker's own site. The login comes from the broker. These are two different things, and mixing them up is how people install the wrong build or hand credentials to a lookalike page.

Type the platform maker's address yourself rather than following a link from a message. Then log in only with the credentials the broker issued, on the account you actually funded.

If a download page asks for your broker password before you have installed anything, stop. That is not how the software is distributed, and no legitimate install needs it.

A platform demo does not test your broker's execution

A demo account shows how the software feels. It does not show how your broker fills orders when Uganda's network is slow or when news breaks. The demo price feed often comes from a different source than the live account. Treat demo time as practice with the buttons, not as evidence about execution.

The gap appears in the order ticket. On a demo, a market order fills instantly at the quoted price. On a live account, the fill depends on your broker's liquidity and your connection from Uganda. Slippage and requotes are broker outcomes, not platform features. No platform can remove them.

So test the broker separately from the platform. After funding, place one small live trade and watch how the fill compares to the price you clicked. Check the broker's own execution page and the CMA Uganda licensed persons list at cmauganda.co.ug. If the live fill differs sharply from the demo, that is information about the broker, not the software.

Which platform is best for day trading in Uganda?

There is no single best platform. MT4 and MT5 are popular for their tools and reliability. cTrader is favoured for transparent pricing. Broker-built platforms can be simpler but less flexible. Your choice depends on your experience and needs. Test each with a demo account.

Can I use MT4 or MT5 with any broker?

No. The broker must support the platform. Many brokers offer MT4 and MT5, but not all. Check the broker's website for the platforms they provide. You cannot connect MT4 to a broker that does not offer it.

Is cTrader available in Uganda?

cTrader is available if a broker offers it. Some brokers serving Ugandan traders may provide cTrader. Availability depends on the broker. You should check directly with the broker's customer support or website.

Trading forex and CFDs on margin carries a high risk of losing more than you deposit. Most retail accounts lose money. Nothing on this page is financial advice.
