Forex Scams in Uganda: How to Spot Them and Check a Licence
Forex trading is real, but many offers aimed at Ugandans are scams. Here is how to tell them apart.

Forex Trading Is Real, but the Offer in Your Inbox May Not Be
Foreign exchange trading is a real market. Banks, businesses and funds trade currencies every day. That does not make every person who contacts you a real broker.
A scam usually starts with a promise. Someone on WhatsApp, Telegram or Facebook says your money will grow fast. They show screenshots of profits. They ask you to send Mobile Money to a personal number.
The market itself is not the scam. The person asking for your money without a verifiable licence is the problem.
| What you see | What to check |
|---|---|
| A fixed monthly return, promised in advance | Ask which licence permits it, then look the firm up on the CMA Uganda licensed persons list. |
| A deposit asked for in gift cards or vouchers | Check the broker's own funding page: firms list bank, card and wallet rails, not vouchers. |
| Someone offering to trade the account for you | Managing money for a client is a separate permission. The register says whether a firm holds it. |
| A withdrawal released only after a new payment | Read the withdrawal terms you agreed to. A fee invented at payout time is not in them. |
None of this is a judgement about any firm. Each line is a check you can run yourself, starting at cmauganda.co.ug.
Common Scam Patterns Ugandans Meet
The first pattern is the fake trader. A stranger offers to trade for you and promises a fixed return. You send money by MTN MoMo or Airtel Money. Early on they may send a small payment back to build trust. Then they ask for more, and the payments stop.
The second pattern is the fake platform. You sign up on a website that looks like a broker. Your dashboard shows profits you cannot withdraw. Support then asks for a fee before you can take your money out. That fee is the scam.
The third pattern is the recruitment scheme. A friend or relative earns by bringing in new people. The money comes from those new people, not from trading. When new joiners slow down, the scheme collapses.
The fourth pattern is the signal seller. Someone charges a subscription for trade signals and claims high accuracy. There is no licence and no track record you can verify. You pay, and you carry all the risk.

How to Check a Licence on the CMA Uganda Register
Uganda's regulator is the Capital Markets Authority of Uganda, known as CMA Uganda. Its public list of licensed and approved persons is at cmauganda.co.ug. Open that list and search for the firm's exact name before you send any money.
Know what the list covers. It covers unit trust managers, fund managers, investment advisers, stock brokers, custodians, dealers and trustees. An online or leveraged foreign-exchange broker is not one of those categories.
This means a firm offering that service to Ugandan residents is working under a licence issued somewhere else. So a claim of being licensed is not enough on its own. Ask where the licence was issued, then check that regulator's own register, not a certificate the firm emailed you.
If a firm says it is licensed but cannot name the regulator and the register, treat that as a warning. A real licence can be checked in minutes, for free, on an official website.

A register says whether a firm holds a licence on the day you look, and nothing about how it treats clients. Search the legal entity from the broker's own footer, not the brand.
Checks You Can Do Before Sending Any Money
Check the payment route. Mobile Money is the main rail in Uganda, alongside MTN MoMo, Airtel Money, bank transfer and card. A licensed firm takes money through a business account in its own name. Be careful if you are told to send to a personal number or a name that does not match the firm.
Check the withdrawal rules on the broker's funding page before you deposit. Read how long withdrawals take and what identity documents are needed. If the rules are hidden or only explained after you pay, stop.
Check the contact details. A firm with no physical address, no landline and only a chat handle is hard to hold to account. Ask for the legal name, the country of registration and the regulator's name in writing.
Finally, slow down. Pressure to pay today is a tactic, not a reason. Time to check the register is your best protection.
How deposits and withdrawals travel
- MTN MoMo
- Mobile wallet — limits set by the wallet provider and the broker
- Airtel Money
- Mobile wallet — limits set by the wallet provider and the broker
- Bank transfer
- Limits set by your bank and the broker
- Card
- Card payment — limits set by your card issuer and the broker
Limits and fees are set by the provider and the broker and change without notice, so they are not printed here. Confirm both in the provider's app and on the broker's funding page, and withdraw to the same account you paid from.
Why a Licence Check Fails When You Do It After the Deposit
Most people check the register only after something goes wrong. By then the money has already left your Mobile Money wallet and the person on the other end has stopped replying. The check is cheap and quick, so do it before the first deposit, not after the first withdrawal is refused.
A licensed firm can still be impersonated. Scammers copy a real firm's name, logo and website text, then hand you a different phone number or a personal MoMo line. The register tells you a firm exists. It does not tell you that the person messaging you works for that firm.
So match three things yourself: the exact legal name on the register, the website address the regulator lists, and the payment details the firm gives you. If any of the three differs from what you were sent, stop. Confirm through the contact details published on cmauganda.co.ug, not through the contact details in the message.
What a broker asks for before a withdrawal
- National ID card or passport
- Who you are
- Selfie with the ID document
- That the document is in your hands
Brokers usually also ask for proof of address; requirements differ per firm. The account-opening page of the broker lists what that firm accepts.
Deposits Are Easy, Withdrawals Are Where the Story Changes
A deposit takes minutes. A withdrawal passes through checks, and that is where unlicensed operators stall. They may ask for a new fee before releasing funds, or say your account needs to be upgraded first. A genuine firm sets its withdrawal process out in writing before you fund the account.
Read the broker's own funding and withdrawal page before sending anything. Look for which methods it names, how long it says a withdrawal takes, and whether the name on the receiving account matches the firm. If the page is vague, treat that as information about how the firm operates.
Keep your own record: the Mobile Money confirmation message, the reference number and the date. If a dispute starts, that record is what you have. Screenshots of a chat are weaker than the transaction message your telecom operator sent you.
| Platform | What it is | Who makes it |
|---|---|---|
| MetaTrader 4 | The older standard; expert advisors and a large script ecosystem | MetaQuotes |
| MetaTrader 5 | The newer build; more order types and timeframes | MetaQuotes |
| cTrader | Depth of market and a different order model | Spotware |
| The broker's own app | Usually simpler, and tied to that one firm | The broker |
A platform is software, not a safeguard: the same terminal is offered by licensed and unlicensed firms alike. The licence question is answered on the register, not in the app store.
A Demo Account Tells You About the Platform, Not the Firm
Many people test a broker with a demo account, see the platform work smoothly, and treat that as proof the firm is sound. It is not. A demo shows how the software behaves. It says nothing about whether the firm is licensed, whether it will pay you, or who owns it.
The demo also hides the part that matters most in Uganda: how money moves in and out. Mobile Money deposits and withdrawals depend on the firm's arrangements with MTN MoMo or Airtel Money, and on its own internal processing. You only see that with real money, which is why the licence check comes first.
Use a demo to learn the buttons. Use the CMA Uganda licensed persons list to decide whether the firm is one you would send money to at all. Those are two separate questions and they are answered in two separate places.

An indicative rate is for sizing a position in your head, not for settling one. The gap between it and your broker's conversion is part of what a trade costs you.
Pressure to Act Today Is the Signal to Slow Down
Scam messages in Uganda often carry a deadline: a bonus that expires, a signal group closing, a slot that must be filled now. Urgency is used because a person who waits will check the register. The deadline is the scam's defence against your verification.
Notice also who is asking. A licensed firm does not need a personal Mobile Money number, and it does not recruit through a stranger's WhatsApp status. If the route to the money runs through an individual rather than the firm's published payment details, the licence question is already settled.
The order of operations is simple. Pause. Look up the firm on cmauganda.co.ug. Confirm the payment details through the firm's own published contact route. Then decide. Nothing about a real offer breaks because you took an hour to check it.
A trading day on an EAT clock
- Busiest window
- 15:00-20:00 EAT — London and New York open together
- Thinnest stretch
- 00:00-09:00 EAT — Sydney alone, wider spreads
- European open
- 11:00-20:00 EAT
- US open
- 15:00-00:00 EAT
- Closed
- Friday New York close until the Sydney open on Monday
Hours are shown for the clocks in force today: London is on GMT until 28 March, New York is on EDT until 1 November. Uganda does not change clocks, so each move shifts these local times by an hour and the page is rebuilt on the day it happens.
Is forex trading a scam or real?
Forex trading is a real activity in a real market. Scams are separate. They copy the language of trading to take your money. The way to tell the difference is to check who holds a licence and where that licence was issued.
How do I check if a broker is licensed in Uganda?
Go to cmauganda.co.ug and open the CMA Uganda licensed persons list. Search the firm's exact name. Note that the list covers unit trust managers, fund managers, investment advisers, stock brokers, custodians, dealers and trustees. An online or leveraged foreign-exchange broker is not one of those categories, so such a firm would be working under a licence issued somewhere else. Check that other regulator's register too.
What should I do if a trader asks for Mobile Money to a personal number?
Treat it as a strong warning sign. A licensed firm collects money through an account in its own business name. A personal number is hard to trace and easy to abandon. Do not send money, and check the firm against the CMA Uganda register first.
